Driving down emissions: How Airpro is building a low‑emission future

As Airpro continues its work to reduce the environmental impact of aviation services, we are taking concrete steps to reduce emissions across our operations. Our sustainability specialist, Heidi Karamo, shares key insights into how we are moving from ambition to action.

Airpro’s direct emissions have dropped by over 86%

Our emissions calculations for 2025 are now complete, and the results mark an important milestone in Airpro’s work to reduce its environmental impact. Since 2022, we have reduced direct emissions from our own operations by over 86%, and compared to 2024, we have nearly halved our direct emissions further. These results reflect systematic and coordinated steps across all teams.

We have neutralised our remaining emissions with nature‑based carbon removal credits, supporting the significant reductions achieved within our own operations. These removal credits also support the restoration of degraded areas, strengthening biodiversity and more resilient ecosystems.

Building a low‑emission future with eGSE & renewable fuels

Over 70% of our GSE fleet at Helsinki Airport is electric, and the share in all our stations is approximately 55%. The electrification of our GSE significantly reduces both emissions and noise levels at the airport, clearly improving the overall working environment. A quieter apron enhances operational communication, supports better focus and situational awareness, and contributes to long‑term wellbeing for ground handling personnel. At the same time, electric equipment reflects our commitment to responsibility and innovation, strengthening our image as a forward‑thinking aviation service provider in the eyes of both employees and passengers. By electrifying our GSE fleet, we lower our environmental footprint and also create a calmer, more comfortable workplace for our teams and improve the passenger experience across the airport environment.

One of the most impactful measures in 2025 was the full transition from fossil-based motor fuel oil to 100% renewable motor fuel oil across every Airpro station. This shift has reduced the emissions generated in our daily ground operations and strengthened our ability to deliver services with a lighter environmental footprint. The change demonstrates how operational decisions directly shape our climate impact. We have also renewable diesel available at all stations.

Strengthening awareness through training and communication

In 2025, we launched a new internal training program built on our Environmental Management System (EMS). Its purpose is simple yet powerful: to ensure every Airpro employee understands their role in reducing our environmental impact.

Alongside the training, we made environmental data more accessible across the organisation. Teams now see our impact, helping integrate more sustainable practices into everyday operations.

Collaboration for future reductions

While we focus on reducing emissions within our own responsibility, meaningful progress also depends on our ability to work together with our partners. Throughout 2025, we have strengthened collaboration with stakeholders and airport partners to identify and develop new ways to reduce emissions in the coming years. These partnerships ensure that our progress does not stop at the boundaries of our organisation, but continues across the wider airport ecosystem, contributing to a forward-looking future for aviation.

A milestone reached and a work continues

Reaching an 86% reduction since 2022 is a significant achievement, but it is also a reminder that determined, systematic action delivers results. Our work continues as we take further steps toward low‑emission operations and support the broader transition taking place across airport environments. Taking responsibility is part of how we operate, make decisions, and develop every day. Together with our employees and partners, we will keep moving forward.
